Selenite is a naturally occurring variety of gypsum known for its translucent to transparent appearance and soft, luminous quality. It typically forms as elongated crystals or fibrous masses, with a smooth, silky surface that can create a subtle glow when it catches the light.

Its color is usually white or colorless, although natural specimens can show soft variations in tone and translucency. Fine internal layers, fibers, and natural inclusions may be visible within the stone, adding depth and revealing the conditions of its formation.
