Black Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when lava cools rapidly, preventing crystals from forming. Its deep black color comes from its dense, glassy structure, although natural obsidian can sometimes show subtle variations in tone, translucency, or internal features.

With a smooth surface and characteristic glass-like sheen, Black Obsidian has a sleek, polished appearance that works particularly well in jewellery. It has a hardness of around 5–5.5 on the Mohs scale, making it suitable for jewellery while still requiring some care to protect its surface from scratches and sharp impacts.

Because obsidian is glass rather than a crystalline mineral, its appearance differs from stones formed through slow crystallization. Natural flow lines, tiny inclusions, or variations within the glass can occur as the volcanic material cools, giving individual pieces their own subtle character.
